The city of Gothenburg is offering many different possibilities for you as a public transport traveller. The state-owned company is called “Västtrafik” and it´s probably the ideal for all the other public transport companies in the World.
Since Västtrafik established, in 1998, it´s trams and busses have been progressing for the better. Most of the busses are now driven by electric from being driven by petrol. The changes that were made lead to a more attractive public transportation for the citizents by being kind to the enviroment.
Public transport in Gothenburg is called Västtrafik and is responsible across Västra Götaland.
Public transport
How to take the trains, buses, trams and ferries.
If you want to get access to the public transport in Gothenburg, we recommend you firstly to buy tickets. If you don't buy tickets Västtrafik has controllers and they randomly pick trams and busses to search for people with no travel-certification. If you are unlucky, they will book you for a fine depending on your age. We recommend you to download the app“Västtrafik”. The app can be downloaded on your Android or Iphone. With the app, you can search for departures depending on what you want to travel with. The app is actually handled by Västtrafik because the public transport provider knows everything about their own organization. If you dislike the public transport because of one or another personal reason, you can hire a bike. If you like to bicycle, there is 600km of different roads for you to cycle on. The roads will take you around the city and out of the city, depending on where you want to go. Don't worry if you get lost, there are signs for direction on the road.
Caution
The bus- and trampstop are in a walk-distance to each other, so hopefully that does not mean problem for you. The problem can occur when you, as a tourist, are out in the evenings, especially on the weekends. The city's nightlife is pretty spectacular and a lot of people might not be sober, however, there are police officers to secure you and the public outside the pubs and clubs. My message to you is to be cautious when you´re out and be having fun. The trams and busses stops going by a specific time on the night. You might be forced to take the cab home when you´re staying outside the city. There are "black-cabs" and those chauffeurs are illegally transporting people and they can be very manipulative. They might want to take advantage of you when you are not sober and take over price to drop you off depending on where you want to go.
Three Big Centers for Public Transport In our city there are three major centers in public transport that we can think of, suitable for tourists. At each one several trams and buses come and go from and to every directions, making it much easier for you to find your take.
The Central Station: This is a stopping place for every public transport: trams and buses as well as trains. Even for taxis the Central Station is the biggest center. No matter where you’re going, from here you will find a way to your location of preference.
Korsvägen: This place is also a huge collecting point of the public transport in the center of the city, located about 5 stations from the Central Station. Several places of events are placed here, including the grand amuesement park Liseberg
Brunnsparken: Situated very close to the Central Station. Meeting point two shopping malls, Nordstan and Kompassen. It holds more directions of public transport than any center in the city.
If you are a tourist and not staying for either a day or more we recommend that you check out this visitors card:
The cost for public transport
Västtrafik offer a wide range of different transport cards depending on how often and/or long you want to travel. You can buy these transport cards in Västtrafik shops or in the nearest Pressbyrå or 7-Eleven. In fact that Gothenborg is a very attractive city, they have a card called “Tourism and visitor cards” adapted for tourists that want to explore Gothenborg for either a one-whole-day or a three-day-period. With these cards you can use the whole public transport system within a specific area (f.g. Gothenburg Zone) as much as you want for either a whole day or three days.

For example “Travel four pay for one” offer is valid for 24h for a cost of 80kr (7 euros). If you are 20 years of age or older, you can take three passengers under 20 year without paying anything extra. With Västtrafik's public transport you can use most of the busses, trams, ferry services and trains.
Price: 80 kr, (7 euros)
Tourism and visitor card: Three-day-card If one day is not enough for you to explore Gothenburg, you can buy a “Three-Day-Card” the value of 160 kr (15 euro). With this card you can travel as much as you want to with Västtrafik. Busses, trams, ferry services and trains are included.
Price: 160 kr, (16 euros)
Charging card If you are planning to stay for a longer term, we recommend that you buy a charging card. With this card you can charge it with either 100, 200 or 500 kr, and use it whenever you feel for it. Every trip you make cost about 25 kr (2 euro).
Caution - If you lose the card, you can always get a new one with the same valut in the charging card. Just remember to save the recive and show it for a member of staff in a Västtrafik shop and they are more will help you.
If you have the interest to explore Gothenburg without the public transport, you can always rent a bike. Rent a bike and go wherever you want to go, avoid the traffic, make your own way and discover Gothenburg with your own eyes.
If you are interested to rent a bike, we recommend that you buy a 3-Day card. This card gives you access to all Göteborg Styr&Ställ bikes.
Where to buy: You can buy a 3-day card at the stations with credit card terminals, for example you can find a credit card terminal in Centralstation.
Prices and terms for a "3-Day card" The card cost 25 kr (2 euro). After payment you will recive a subscription hold on to this because you will be needing it when you return and rent a new bike.
Save Your Money – Walk Over! As a tourist, wanting to get to a place, you often use the public transport even only for one station, not realizing that it's actually closer than you think. We want to advise you to try and walk over, save the money and spend it on something else. We are positive that any citizen would gladly show you how if you ask.
Lisebergslinjen
In Gothenburg there is a special tram called Lisebergsvagnen. It's like a rolling museum that will transport you at the same time as it will show you the main streets of Gothenburg. The tram Lisebergslinjen uses are preserved and are 40 to 70 years old. The trip starts of at the central station and goes all the way to Liseberg passed Avenyn, which is the largest street in Gothenburg, where you can go shopping and eat at restaurants. Most transports, like the train, the flight buses and almost all of the regular buses and trams, goes by the Central station so if you want to see Gothenburg at the same time as you want to go to Liseberg, Lisebergslinjen is a the perfect transport.
Schedule
The tram goes every Saturday when Liseberg is open, and every day in July month.
Transfer Buses in our City
When finally landing in Gothenburg, without an opportunity for a pick-up or taking a taxi, we have transfer buses to offer you a comfortable and fast way into the city, where you thereafter can take your tram, train or bus to the location you will live in for the duration of your stay.
Gothenburg contains two airports. The bigger and more known one is called Landvetter and is situated at the south east part of our end, 28,5 km from the central. The second one called Gothenburg-City Airport is like a little sibling or the low-price, smaller version of Landvetter and is situated 15km from central city. The differences lies in what the two airports can offer. Landvetter offers both scheduled- and charter flights, with a wide international range, while Gothenburg-City Airport offers flights with shorter distance and more limited options. Behind our Central Station there is a bus terminal called Nils Ericsson Terminalen and all transfer buses either leaving for one of the two airports named above or coming back collect there. In search for where to take your transfer bus, you should know that there is only one place possible.
Ticket prices.
The prices from the airports differ depending on which airport because of the difference in size and distance. The trips to Landvetter are a bit more expensive.
Ages 0-8: No charges while travelling with a paying adult. But only with approximately four within the same age category.
Ages 9-17: Gbg City - 60kr (5 euro) / Landvetter: 65kr (5.5 euro) Ages 18+: Gbg City - 69kr (6 euro) / Landvetter: 89kr (7 euro) Online ticket prices from the web shop (link is available on the bottom of the page) do not differ from the regular ones purchased either on the airport, on a traveling bureau or at Nils Ericsson Terminalen. You can also buy your ticket on board if you have a charge card. Resellers of a bus ticket are for example 7-Eleven or Pressbyrån.
(For environmental cause the transfer buses are available frequently, saving you from harming and the environment from being harmed by intoxicating emissions if you would have chosen to get a cab or have someone pick you up. Both airports have adapted their bus schedule to the flight departures and arrivals, but Landvetter Airport offer departures to the city every twenty minutes. Also, the transfer buses are quite high up in their seats, guaranteeing an appealing view that will add up to your comfort. And free Wi-Fi is offered! Could you really ask for more?)
Cab
If all of the alternatives above are too complicated for you or maybe you just have a lot of luggage that you don't want to drag around on buses and trams you could just grab a cab instead.
Most days in Gothenburg it's pretty easy getting a cab. Well, it's not like New York where you can just wave and a cab will be right at your feet. In Gothenburg, the easiest way to get a cab is to call for it. We have several different cabs companies in Gothenburg, but we would recommend:
Taxi Göteborg, phone nr: 650 000
Taxi Kurir, phone nr: 27 27 27
Prices: Taxi Göteborg Weekdays between 06.00-18.00: + Initial fare: 45 kr+ Per km: 12,71 kr+ Hourly rate: 498 kr
At other hours: + Initial fare: 45 kr+ Per km: 14,94 kr+ Hourly fate: 505 kr
Taxi Kurir Weekdays between 04.00-09.00: + Initial fare: 35 kr+ Per km: 13,27 kr+ Hourly rate: 485 kr
Weekdays between 09.00-16.00: + Initial fare: 35 kr+ Per km: 11,60 kr+ Hourly rate: 406 kr
Weekdays between 16.00-23.00 + Saturday and Sunday 04.00-23.00: + Initial fare: 35 kr+ Per km: 13,27 kr+Hourly rate: 485 kr
All days between 23.00-04.00: + Initial fare: 35 kr+ Per km: 14,94 kr+ Hourly rate: 515 kr
The reason I recommend these companies are because they are both serious companies and famous in Gothenburg. When you want to order a cab you have two options, either you call for a cab at the time you need one or you pre-book a cab. By pre-booking, I mean that you can order a cab to pick you up at a specific time on beforehand. So if you know exactly at what time and place you will need a cab this is a great option.

Taxi Göteborg have fixed prices if you want to go to or from Lanvetter airport. 15 minutes waiting time after your flight has landed is included. After 15 minutes you have to pay extra.
