Gothenburg might be small and overshadowed by the capital city Stockholm, but we are a very cultural city that arranges many events to bring our citizens together. Here are a few favorite activities to do and look forward to during this year of 2014.

WAY OUT WEST
Way out west is one of Gothenburg's favorite events. It is a musical festival that takes place during summer. Way out west was founded in 2007 by the festival arranger company Luger. Since then way out west has taken place every year.

This year we will be seeing artists such as Robyn, Pusha T and Janelle Monae etc. These artists have millions of hits on youtube and are well known among teenagers. Gothenburg is proud to present Way Out West, welcome.

GÖTEBORGS KULTURKALASGöteborgs Kulturkalas can be translated in to Gothenburg's cultural festival. Gothenburg's cultural festival is also one of Gothenburg's favorite summer events. During this week we put more thought in to cultural activities such as music, dance, art and theater.

PADDAN
Through the channels of Gothenburg and Göta Älv you can take a boat trip round Gothenburg and go boat-sightseeing. The ride takes around 45 minutes. On the boat you find a tour guide talking about the history of Gothenburg. A lovely boat trip during especially the summer.

HBTQ-FESTIVAL
Gothenburg is one of Sweden’s foremost gay cities. HBTQ Festival is a unique cultural festival, highlighting the standard criticism about HBTQ people. During the festival, rainbow flags are hoisted in communal buildings, trams and even small flags in offices and desks to acknowledge everyone’s equal rights. The festival begins with a flag ceremony in Gustav Adolfs Torg, and ends with a parade. The festival is usually held during the end of May or in the beginning of June. The dates vary from year to year.

GOTHIA CUP
Gothia Cup is the world’s largest youth football tournament with 1600 teams and 80 nations. Every summer football teams worldwide arrives to Gothenburg, because of this amazing event. The tournament begins with an opening ceremony in Nya Ullevi. It is a perfect opportunity if you are a football fan or just want to enjoy the get together in Heden. The tournament usually ends with a football game between two finalizing teams.

GOTHENBURG HALF MARATHON
Gothenburg Half Marathon is an annual running competition in Gothenburg. It's the largest running competition in Sweden, and the largest half-marathon running competition in the world, with 62 000 entries for the most recent marathon competition in 18th May 2013.
The race takes place in May, and has been organized annually since 1980. It starts outside, and finishes in, the old athletics arena Slottsskogsvallen in the Slottsskogen Park. It takes off northwards over the large bridge Älvsborg Bridge, follows the northern bank of the Göta Älv River, and returns back on the Göta Älv Bridge, goes through the central cityarea, before reaching the finishing line. The whole race is approximately 21km.

SHOPPING

NORDSTAN

Description and stores:
Today Nordstan is a shopping mall in Gothenburg city’s center. In the 19th century Nordstan was a lively area were the emigrants to America walked to take the boats . In 1972 the new shopping centre first opened. Nordstadstorget is situated in the mittle of the mall where exhibitions and fairs are arranged.

Nordstan offers everything from food, health-stores, fashion, jewels, shoes, electronics, books, sport and toy’s. Some bigger brands are H&M, Gina Tricot, Vero moda, Esprit, Desigual, Brothers, Dressman, Stadium, Guldfynd, Ecco shoes, Elgiganten and Åhléns City.

Prices:
The prices are on a medium level. It’s not too expensive but it’s not cheap either.
Restaurants:
Nordstan has a great offer of various restaurants and the area around it contains even more restaurants. Nordstan offer fast-food like Subway, Burger King, McDonald’s, Gourmet korv and Slimfood and cafes such as Cappucino, Condeco, Espresso House and Happy Mango Frozen Yoghurt & Icecream Bar. To lunch and diner we would like to recommend Feskarbröderna (fish store and restaurant), Paprika Salladsbar (salad bar), Fair play restaurant (sport pub), Jensens Bøfhus (Steakhouse), Pizza hut (Pizza restaurant) and Göteborgs Wok just outside the shopping mall (Asian buffet).
For children:
Nordstan offers a selection of children clothing shops like Bling Junior, Desigual, H&M, Polar .O. Pyret and Kappahl. Its playstores like BR Leksaker, Lekia and are always a big succes among the Toddlers and at the same time teenagers whom enjoy themselves in stores like Gamestop . However Nordstan doesn’t offer any playgrounds or parks but you can find benches to rest on.

ARKADEN

Description and stores:
Arkaden is a shopping mall between Nordstan and Kompassen. Arkaden was built back in 1899. Then there was restaurants, cafes, stores and a hotel. The old Arkaden was demolished 1972 and the new one was replaced 1974. The new shopping mall focuses on fashion, design and decor. Here you can find some more expensive stores like Raglady, Tara, Björn Borg and Peak Performance but also second hand in Beyond Retro.

Prices:
The prices are can vary amongst the stores. Arkaden offer many more expensive stores like Raglady, Tara, Mango, Benetton, One Piece, Björn Borg and Peak Performance. Shops with prices in a medium level are Topshop/Topman, Zara, MQ, Vans, flash and Nilson Shoes. If you want to find cheap clothes the second hand shop Beyond Retro (inside Topshop) is a good option.
Restaurants:
Arkaden offer two cafes and one restaurant. The cafe Espresso House is situated all over the central Gothenburg. Here you can find a large selection of coffees, teas, pastries, sandwiches and salads. The other cafe Pieceofcake offers cakes, cupcakes, cookies and other pastries and delights in many varieties. The restaurant Khau Geng is a Asian restaurant which serves the most food from Asia from soups to skewers.
For children:
Zara, Vans, Benetton, One Piece and Peak Performance etc, have departments with children clothing. Besides that Arkaden offers some benches to rest on, and well reknown tobacco shop.

KOMPASSEN
Description and stores:
Kompassen is a shopping centre situated beyond Nordstan and Arkaden. It was first built 1973 but was rebuilt both in 1990 and 2003. In the beginning it contained 38 stores, a hairdresser and two restaurants. Today, Kompassen offers fashion and shoes stores like Gina Tricot, Levi’s store, Monki, H&M, JC, Boomerang and Scorett.

Prices:
The prices varies among the stores from a medium level (H&M, N-Store, Gina Tricot and JC) to more expensive (Levi’s, Solo and Boomerang).
Restaurants:
Kompassen offers one cafe, Condeco. In Condeco you can find everything from breakfast, lunch, pastries and coffee. Just outside the mall some older restaurants like Gamle Port are placed.

NK (Nordiska Kompaniet)
Description:
NK (Nordiska kompaniet) is a department store situated in both Gothenburg and Stockholm. The store can be compared with Bloomingdale’s in New York and Harrods or House of Fraser in London, but in a smaller version. NK in Gothenburg was founded in 1992.

NK consists of many detail stores. Alltogheter 1 230 brands are represented, such as Marc o’Polo, Gant, Fillippa K, Ralph Lauren, Mexx, Michael Kors, Lexington and Karen Millen. NK has deparments for fashion, sport, accessories, interior and cosmetic.

Prices:
The prices are very high and the products are expensive. It’s mostly the upper class who come here to shop.
Restaurants:
NK provides three restaurants/cafes. Espresso House is a cafe. Here you can find a large selection of coffees and teas, pastries, sandwiches and salads. NK Kaffe, Te & Choklad is another cafe which has its focus on chocolate. They serve coffee, tea and cookies as well. NK Sushi is a sushi restaurant who serves some of the most delicious sushi in Gothenburg
For Children:
NK has a deparment for children where brands such as Mexx, Polo Ralph Lauren, Replay, Tommy Hilfiger and Petit Bateau are represented.

BACKAPLAN

Description and stores:
Backaplan, located on Hisingen, is one of Sweden’s biggest shopping areas. It consist of many independent shops (small ones to big ones) in a several neighboring buildings. You have to walk outdoor to reach all the stores.

On Backaplan you can find everything, for example food, health-stores, pet shops, fashion, jewels, shoes, electronics, books, sport and toys. Some bigger brands are Toys”R”Us, H&M, Gina Tricot, Dressman, Stadium, Elgiganten, Coop Forum and Akademibokhandeln.

Right now (about 2010-2025) the new Backaplan is under construction. When the building is complete, new flats with boutiques on the ground floor will bind the place tighter. New playgrounds, parks and shopping malls will also appear.

Prices:
The prices are on a medium level. It´s not too expensive but it’s not cheap either.
Restaurants:
Backaplan has a great offer of various restaurants from all over the world. If you are on the go, fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s, Burger King and Subway are placed near the bus station. If you have more time, we would like to recommend Mr Tomato (Italian Cuisine), Indiska hörnet (Indian cuisine), Solsidan (traditional swedish cusine) and Thai Fasai Restaurang (Thai cuisine). Café Vi, Marias Café and Café Backa are some of Backaplan’s most attractive cafes.
For children:
Before this upcoming renewal is complete, Backaplan doesn’t has much to offer to kids who are tired of shopping. But in a few years new playgrounds and parks will appear where you can rest your tiered legs. However, Backaplan offer shops for children like the fashion stores Cubus, Lindex, Kappahl, H&M and Babyhörnan and also toys stores like Toys “R” Us and Nids4kids.

FRÖLUNDA TORG

Frölunda Torg is one of the most appreciated shopping centers in gothenburg. The center is located 10 min from the center of gothenburg, and is very easy to access. Traveling to Frölunda Torg by car, bus or tram is both quick and straightforward. They also offer 3 different parking groups for those who come by car.

The center has close to 200 stores, a marketplace, a family lounge, and a bright and modern shopping environment.

Nearly all of the famous swedish stores can be found in Frölunda Torg, but also other international stores are available.
The stores in Frölunda Torg cover a large price range and there is also a part of Förlunda Torg where they offer more expensive stores with swedish/international well known brands.

Frölunda Torg is most known for its nice environment and the family friendly places in the center, which makes it very appreciated by mostly families with younger children.

KUNGSMÄSSAN

Kungsmässan is a shopping center 25 km south of gothenburg, in the heart of Kungsbacka. Its takes nearly 1 h from gothenburg by car, but if you want you can take the train from the centralstation and the travel time will be down to 20-25 min.

The mall has 90 stores, also a wide range of cafes and restaurants. The stores that kungsmässan offer are the typical swedish brands and stores. Kungsmässan doesnt quite have any big namned expensive brand stores but there are still some other smaller swedish brands that you can only find in kungsmässan.

Kungsmässan is known for being one of the most calm and relaxning centers in gothenburg because of its open spaces and their many lounge spots. Year 2008 Kungsmässan was appointed to be the shopping center of the year, 2009 and 13 is was chosen Sweden's most pleasant mall. In the same survey it also got the highest grade on best service.

FREEPORT
Freeport is an outlet situated outside gothenburg, in Kungsbacka.
Freeport is known for selling well known brands with at least a 70% discount on all of their items. They offer clothing, hair products, shoes, toys, and households items in over 50 stores. Freeport is one of west Sweden's largest shopping attractions. In 2010 the number of visitors were 1,3 million. Freeport has one resturant and that is macdonals, it also has a playground for the younger kids.

ULLARED
Ullared is a well known shopping center situated outside Falkenberg. This means that it can take quite a long time to travel from gothenburg, but it is worth it.
If you go by car from Gothenburg it takes you around 1 and a half hour to go there.
Ullared is Sweden's biggest tourist attraction, not only people from sweden travel very far but people also travel from Denmark and Norway to come to Ullared. Last year, Gekås Ullared was visited by 4.6 million people. The record for the number of customers on a single day was made on Tuesday 30 July 2013, when 27,500 customers shopped in the store.
Ullared offers a variety of different activities if you are staying there for a few days. The offer skiing, golfing, running/football/tennis, fishing, biking, swimming, barbecuing, foto studios and dance festivals.

Activities
Liseberg
Liseberg is the biggest amusement park in Scandinavia. Liseberg offers a full range of activites, such as concerts, rollercoasters, fortune wheels, ferris wheel. Furthermore, liseberg offers many kinds of restaurants: from up-scale restaurants to buffet and fast food. There are also hostels provided by Liseberg at a low cost.

Slottsskogen

When founded in the 17th century, it belonged to the Älvsborg fortress to provide timber to local military activities. Today slotsskogen is an extremely popular place for the people of Gothenburg. The park is a place of peace and quiet but in the same time a place for fun and activities.
In the park there’s a zoo. Playgrounds for: football, volleyball. Only your imagination can stop you in slottskogen. There’s also a big music festival during the summer called Way Out West who’s known all throughout Europe.

Göteborgsoperan

The opera of Gothenburg is a rather new building. Built in 1994 it opened on the first of November. The year of 2000 it hosted the Swedish selection of the Eurovision Song Contest.
The auditorium is built in classical opera style with its stalls and balconies. Although it’s called an opera house, there are different productions as: ballets, musicals, operettas and of course there’s opera provided.

Botaniska trädgården

The Botanical Garden of Gothenburg is one of the finest gardens in Europe. The Garden was introduced in 1923 for the celebration of Gothenburg’s 300th anniversary and has two stars in the Michelin Green Guide. With 175 hectares and about 16,000 species, The Botanical Garden is a must for every tourist.
